He works in the team testing plant samples for fungal pathogens, employing microscopy and traditional techniques to determine the mycological causes of plant diseases. This includes testing samples for Defra’s Sudden Oak Death Survey, to monitor and control threats to ornamentals, crops and woodlands.

Mike also maintains the collection of fungi and fungus-like organisms for internal proficiency testing and control material, as well as selling them commercially to customers.
