Fera National Reference Laboratory Status

Fera acts as National Reference Laboratory under assimilated Regulation (EU) 2017/625 on official controls and other official activities performed to ensure the application of food and feed law, rules on animal health and welfare, plant health and plant protection products. The Regulation establishes a harmonised framework of rules for monitoring and enforcing feed and food law to ensure feed and food is safe and wholesome.

Appointed UK NRLs

UK NRLs are appointed by competent authorities to carry out core functions cited in Article 101 of assimilated Regulation (EU) 2017/625. These include:

  • Collaboration & Sharing of Expertise

    These laboratories must collaborate with other laboratories in the UK and internationally in their particular area of expertise and disseminate nationally information by participating in the activities of international organisations and standardisation activities.

  • Scientific & Technical Assistance

    The NRLs provide scientific and technical assistance to the national competent authorities.

  • Improving Quality, Accuracy & Comparability

    The overall objective of the NRLs is to improve the quality, accuracy and comparability of the results at Official Laboratories (OLs).
